It is foolish and childish, on the face of it, to affiliate ourselves with anything so insignificant and patently contrived and commercially exploitive as a professional sports team, and the amused superiority and icy scorn that the non-fan directs at the sports nut (I know this look — I know it by heart) is understandable and almost unanswerable. Almost. What is left out of this calculation, it seems to me, is the business of caring — caring deeply and passionately, really caring — which is a capacity or an emotion that has almost gone out of our lives. And so it seems possible that we have come to a time when it no longer matters so much what the caring is about, how frail or foolish is the object of that concern, as long as the feeling itself can be saved. Naivete — the infantile and ignoble joy that sends a grown man or woman to dancing and shouting with joy in the middle of the night over the haphazardous flight of a distant ball — seems a small price to pay for such a gift.
Go sharks.

Musically, I thought 2007 was pretty great. Album of the year? Sky Blue Sky for sure with Hold Steady’s Boys and Girls in America a close second. Honourable mentions to Arctic Monkeys, Amy Winehouse (Back in Black was actually released in the UK in ‘06 but whatever), Bright Eyes, Arcade Fire, and Iron & Wine’s best album yet.
Top songs…
1. Either Way - Wilco
2. Stuck Between Stations - The Hold Steady
3. Back in Black - Amy Winehouse
4. Do Me a Favor - Arctic Monkeys
5. Four Winds - Bright Eyes
6. Flightless Bird, American Mouth - Iron & Wine
7. Friday Night at the Drive-in Bingo - Jens Lekman
8. Unless It’s Kicks -Okkervil River
9. No Cars Go - Arcade Fire
10. Please Read the Letter - Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

Anyone else remember Sinbad Jr and his Magic Belt? No one I have ever asked about it remembers it. I used to watch it at my Nan’s and for a long time I thought that possibly I imagined it.
Sinbad Jr.(the voice of Tim Matheson! Weird. Who knew?) is the son of Sinbad, the famous sea explorer. He becomes superhuman getting his power from his magic belt. His first mate is the funny and loyal assistant Salty the Parrot (voice of Mel Blanc of Bugs Bunny fame.)
Good stuff.
